Tracked vehicles

Tracked vehicles are highly effective in difficult terrain.

The primary purpose of tracks on a vehicle is to act as a long, continuous roadway that rolls out in front of the vehicle’s wheels. This increases the contact area between the vehicle and the terrain, reducing ground pressure. It prevents the vehicle from sinking or getting stuck when moving on soft or uneven surfaces.

The tracks thus function as a wider and more stable foundation for the vehicle to move on. Instead of relying solely on narrow wheels, the tracks distribute the weight over a larger surface area. This reduces the pressure on each wheel and decreases the risk of the vehicle sinking into loose or soft ground.
The tracks allow the vehicle to move efficiently over difficult terrain or soft surfaces (think marshes, snow, sand, wetlands) without digging in or getting stuck. They also provide better traction and stability, which is especially important when the terrain is challenging!
