Terrain Vehicle m/42, armoured body - tgbil m/42 kp
The Terrain Vehicle m/42 (Terrängbil m/42) was developed during World War II as an early Swedish infantry combat vehicle.
In popular parlance, it was called the "KP car" or, due to its boxy appearance, the "Coffin".
At its core, it is an off-road flatbed truck with four-wheel drive, equipped with an armored body surrounding the entire vehicle. It was designed to transport soldiers in and out of combat and could also be used as a protected firing position during battle. Initially, it lacked a roof, allowing passengers to shoot while on the move, using the armor around the flatbed for protection.
The vehicle type remained in service until 2004, of course with various modifications made to the original model over time. The museum's example is originally a 1942 model and was registered in 1945. In 1956, the vehicle was modified and equipped with an anti-aircraft machine gun on the cabin. In the mid-1980s, further improvements were made, including the addition of an armored roof and better protection against shrapnel. The rear section was shortened, a door for disembarking/loading was added, and the number of passengers was reduced from 16 to 7.
During the 1960s Congo Crisis, the peacekeeping forces from the UN used the Terrain vehicle m/42. Their vehicles were painted white and marked with "UN."
SKPF stands for Scania Karosseri Pansar (SKP), and that in 1956, the vehicle was modified with an anti-aircraft machine gun m/36 (F stands for Fordonsluftvärn, or vehicle anti-aircraft).
The "D" designation marks the purpose for which the vehicle was modernized and modified in the 1980s. The D-variant was built for combat and troop transport.
Kalixlinjen Museum has two examples of this vehicle.
