BGBV 82

It is unavoidable that heavy vehicles get stuck in terrain that cannot support them. And as some of us know – when an off-road vehicle gets stuck, it really gets stuck. It takes powerful equipment to free an armored vehicle from marshy ground. 
In a military context, it is crucial to quickly get the stuck vehicle back into combat, and to solve this problem, different types of recovery vehicles were developed. 

The BGBV 82, or Armoured recovery Vehicle 82, was developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It was unique as a recovery vehicle because it wasn’t based on a previous tank chassis (which was common), but was designed specifically for its task – to pull out vehicles significantly heavier than the BGBV 82 itself. This meant that the BGBV 82, with its lighter weight, could reach the recovery target without getting stuck itself. Even though it weighs in at 26.5 tons, it is still considered light in this context. 

The BGBV 82 is a powerhouse. With 310 hp and a winch pulling capacity directly to the rear (single pull) of 20 tons. 
The crane has a lifting capacity of 5.5 tons with a boom length of 1.5 m (1.5 tons with a boom length of 5.5 m). 

The BGBV 82 was equipped with 20 mm automatic guns m/47D and smoke launchers to protect itself during missions in combat situations. 

The dozer blade was primarily used for fieldwork, such as when crossing water obstacles, where ramps could be excavated to lay vehicle mats. If it got steep, the BGBV 82 could winch both itself and other vehicles up with its 140 m long winch cable.
It could reach a top speed of 56 km/h on roads, perform well in terrain, and could even swim.
